your data, your phone

Privacy Policy

Effective 18 August 2026 · Last updated 18 August 2026

Mealog is built so that your meal log stays with you. This policy explains exactly what the app does with your photos, your voice and your entries — and what it never does with them.

1. Who is responsible

Mealog is operated by V. Skromny, an individual developer based in Switzerland, who is the controller of any personal data described here.

2. What Mealog processes

Only what is needed to turn a meal into an entry:

Mealog has no sign-up, asks for no name, address or date of birth, and does not read your contacts, location or health records.

3. Where your log lives

Your meal log is stored on your iPhone. It is not uploaded to a Mealog account, because there is no Mealog account. Deleting an entry removes it; deleting the app removes the whole log. If you back your phone up to iCloud, the log is included in that backup under Apple's terms, not ours.

4. How AI estimation works

When you log a meal, the photo, voice clip or text is sent over an encrypted connection to OpenAI, which analyses it and returns the estimate you see. The request passes through a small backend of ours hosted on Vercel, which forwards it and nothing more — it does not store, log or inspect the content.

Neither the media nor the estimate is retained on our servers after the response is returned. OpenAI states that content submitted through its API is not used to train its models. OpenAI processes the request in the United States, so logging a meal involves a transfer of that content abroad.

Meal logs say something about your health. What you eat, when you eat and how much can reveal a great deal, which is why Mealog keeps the log on your device, shows no ads and runs no analytics. Treat your device passcode as the lock on that data.

5. What Mealog never does

6. Who else is involved

That is the complete list. No one else receives your data.

7. How long anything is kept

On our side, nothing is kept: media is discarded once the estimate is returned. On your side, entries stay until you delete them or remove the app.

8. Your rights

Under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection — and under the GDPR if you are in the EU or EEA — you may request access to your personal data, correction, deletion, restriction, objection or portability, and you may complain to a supervisory authority (in Switzerland, the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner).

In practice most of these you can exercise yourself in seconds, because the data is on your phone: edit an entry to correct it, delete an entry or the app to erase it, export your log to take it elsewhere. For anything else, email v.skromny@bluewin.ch and you will get an answer within 30 days.

9. Security

Everything leaving the app travels over encrypted connections (TLS). Your log is protected by your device's own security — a passcode or Face ID is the single most effective thing you can do to protect it. No system is perfect, and we do not claim otherwise.

10. Children

Mealog is not directed at children under 16 and should not be used by them without a parent or guardian's involvement.

11. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version appears on this page with a new date. Material changes will also be flagged in the app.

12. Contact
